Majors

Biology
Department's Website

The biology major offers students the opportunity to develop a basic understanding of the organization and the processes of life, from the level of molecules and cells through the level of organs and organ systems to the level of populations, species, eco-systems and evolution. The major also offers the mathematical, chemical and physical background necessary to understand biology and to help train students in practical scientific skills associated with each of these areas of study. The major also allows students to begin to specialize in a subdiscipline of biology; a special program of study, the concentration in Marine Biology, is offered for those interested.

Concentrations
Marine biology (It should be noted that, although they are not official concentrations, biology majors may also choose the majority of their electives in the following areas: biochemistry, cell and molecular biology; ecology and evolution; microbiology; neurobiology; and physiology).

Transferring
to the major:
Students transferring to biology must have a minimum cumulative grade average of 2.0 and have completed MTH121 or one semester of calculus with a grade of C or better. Acceptance into the major will be based on student’s meeting the department’s criteria for admission and availability of space in the programs.
Progress in the major:
After four semesters in the major, students must have a quality point average of at least 2.0 in all science and math courses and have completed at least six of the following courses:

BIOU101/BIOU102 and BIOU103/BIOU104 (Principles of Biology)
BIOU301/BIOU302 (Genetics and Molecular Biology)
CHMU211 and CHMU214 (General Chemistry)
CHMU311 and CHMU313 (Organic Chemistry)
MTHU151 and MTHU152 (Calculus and Differential Equations - Biology)

Students who transfer into the biology major will be allowed two semesters after entering the major to meet the minimum standards for their class. Students who fail to meet the above standards will be placed on departmental probation. Two consecutive semesters on departmental probation will result in dismissal from the major.
