LICENSURE IN ELEMENTARY EDUCATION (Grades 1-6)

To be licensed as an elementary school teacher, a student must complete: an appropriate arts and sciences major; the minor in elementary education; student teaching, and the appropriate college core courses. Students who successfully complete this program receive a B.A. or B.S. degree in their arts and sciences major and are eligible for endorsement for initial teacher licensure.

The professional education program helps students understand how children acquire literacy and develop numerical, scientific, social, and aesthetic concepts. The focus of the program is on urban education, and how the young learner and schools organize curricula and culturally relevant teaching to ensure successful learning for all students. These skills help students prepare for careers in elementary schools and other educational agencies.

LICENSURE IN SECONDARY EDUCATION (Grades 9-12)

For students seeking careers as high school teachers, the minor in secondary education offers an opportunity to prepare to teach in a range of disciplines. Please check with the School of Education advisor regarding specific disciplines. The focus of the program is in areas of adolescent development, curriculum design, and culturally relevant pedagogy. Students reflect on the needs of urban secondary students, develop strategies for engaging students in learning their discipline and ensuring that all students learn effectively.
